Freddie Mercury was the lead singer of the English rock band, Queen, and he is remembered as one of the greatest vocalists and performance artists in popular music.

In the early 1970s Mercury had a long-term relationship with a girlfriend with whom he lived for many years. He spent his last six years in the care of a male companion. Mercury issued a public statement that he had AIDS a little over 24 hours before dying from complications of the condition on 24 November 1991.
