Freddie Mercury was the lead singer of the English rock band, Queen, and he is remembered as one of the greatest vocalists and performance artists in popular music. His distinctive voice included a recorded range of nearly four octaves. As a songwriter he was remarkable for using different genres including rockabilly, heavy metal, disco, and others. His songwriting credits include many international hits, such as "Killer Queen," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Somebody to Love," "We Are the Champions" and "Crazy Littl' Thing Called Love."

A flamboyant and highly-theatrical frontman, Mercury performed live with Queen in front of around 700 stadium audiences around the world.

In the early 1970s Mercury had a long-term relationship with a girlfriend with whom he lived for many years. He spent his last six years in the care of a male companion. Mercury issued a public statement that he had AIDS a little over 24 hours before dying from complications of the condition on 24 November 1991.
